Running and Going Back to the Beginning

"There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going." -Bevery Sills, Opera Singer

I have not been blogging much the last month because I have been so busy training and racing. Sometimes it is just hard to juggle work, training, racing, writing and taking care of things at home.

I am not sure anyone reads the blog anyways, so it is an easy thing to drop when there are lots of things competing for my time.

I returned to the site that saw the first race for Team CMT. I raced at the Deer Run in Brown Deer on April 29th.  This site was where three team members kicked things off five years ago. This time I did the 5K race.

I am part of the Badgerland Striders local running club championship series. This was the third race in the series of eight races.  At this point I was leading the series, since the woman faster than me had not shown up at the other two races.  Not everyone in the race is signed up for the championship. In fact there are five in the age group. You have to be a club member and complete 4 out of 8 races.  I finished 4th in the other races, but first among club members competing for the championship.

I've calculated that as long as I show up for all the races and place like I usually do, I will win the club championship for my age group. So I had incentive to show up even thought it was windy and in the high 30's.  There is no shelter at the park where the race was held, so I knew things would be a bit chilly.  The race was pretty uneventful and I finished 4th in the age group.  The other woman faster than me competing for the championship did show up and ran a couple of minutes faster than me.  I came and did just what I needed to do and I had fun socializing after the race.

I also signed up for a four race series the Beer Garden 5 K here in Milwaukee. The county sponsors a traveling beer garden that sets up for 6 weeks in local parks. There is beer, food and music. The race goes to four of the sites. The first one was in Juneau Park on May 17th.

The park is on a bluff in downtown Milwaukee overlooking Lake Michigan. It was in the high 50's and windy.  Again the incentive to show up was the points toward the series championship.  The race started on top of the bluff on a bike path, went down the bluff, then turned around and went back up the bluff.  I pushed really hard in this race and finished in 29:41.  Not great but good enough for 4th place again and 3rd for the series. The race entry included a nice pint glass and a root beer.  Another fun race. I feel like the Queen of 4th place.  As the season goes on, perhaps I will get a bit faster.
Running a race really pushes me much more than my normal workout.

I am really looking forward to the rest of the races in both these series.

Soup Sunday- Tuscan Beef Soup

It's been a while since I've done a blog posting. I've been busy working out to get ready for triathlon season.    My outdoor triathlon season started last week, so I should have plenty to write about.

When I make bone broth I always freeze the extra to use for soup base.  Bone broth is the base for this recipe and I added things I had in my kitchen and pantry.  Feel free to adapt it to the supplies you have on hand.

6 cups beef bone broth
1 cup of cooked beef
2 stalks of celery chopped
1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1/2 cup sun dried tomatoes sliced
1 can white beans
2 tablespoons dried oregano
6 ounces gluten free spiral noodles, prepared

Add broth to stockpot.  Add the vegetables and beans.  Bring to a simmer.   Add the beans and the oregano.  Place a 1/4 cup of noodles in a soup bowl. Add soup and top with grated Parmesan cheese.
Serves 6
