Party with the Patrol

"If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." -Wayne Dyer

The day the announcement was made that I was a National Ski Patrol Subaru ambassador, I got an email from the Heileger Hiegel (HH) ski patrol.  HH is German for Holy Hill. The Catholic shrine is just up the roa and sits on a very high hill.  They wanted to reserve me for a February party. It was October. I admire that kind of advanced planning.

So on  February 23rd, I made my way to HH. I could see the Holy Hill church high atop a hill just a bit beyond the ski hill.  The hill is set in the gorgeous Kettle Moraine area about 30 minutes west of Milwaukee.

HH is a private hill. meaning it is for members only. They have alpine runs and a nordic course.  I'd only been there a few times. Once for a region ski test, one for a nordic race and once for first aid refresher. They have a beautiful lodge with a circular wood roof over a open hearth. The roof has vintage ski posters lining every surface. The view is incredible because the lodge sits halfway up the ski hill.

It was an absolutely perfect day. It was sunny and in the high 40's.  I got in some Nordic practice before I joined the party on the sun deck overlooking the main run.  The barbeque was a fundraiser for the patrol.  There is nothing like sitting outside eating hamburgers right off the grill.

There was even some unique entertainment in the form of Jesse the street performer.

Jesse can be found performing in downtown Milwaukee outside of sporting events like Bucks basketball or Admirals hockey.  He makes pretty cool music playing on plastic buckets and kettles.
He is now doing private events like this party.  I gave him some tips about contacting my running club about doing some of our events.  So maybe I will get to see Jesse again.

The NSP rep who works with the ambassadors told me I was selected because of my CMT. They felt it was really unusual for somone with CMT to be a patroller.   I was selected as a storyteller ambassador to tell my story of being a patroller and athlete with CMT. Subaru's brand is all about supporting active and healthy outdoor lifestyles. So this event was perfect for me and my Subaru.

I was asked by several people at the party about how I got picked to be one of the ambassadors. I told them about having CMT and the work that I am doing.  I hope those I meet with the Subaru will look at those with impairments differently.  There are lots of Americans with impairments that are not apparent. I hope they can realize from meeting me, that even with something like CMT, we lead full and active lives.

After the event I got an email from the person who invited me. He said the car was a big hit and thanked me for coming. I let him know it was my pleasure and sent him the link to my web site and asked him to take few minutes to learn about me and why I had been selected.

I left just a bit early. I had a duty shift to get to at my own hill. I wanted to get some runs in while the
I ended up sking for 9 hours at my own hill. I paid for it later that night. I think I got a little dehydrated/ As I was trying to fall asleep I had cramps in my calves and thighs. Maybe I pushed myself just a bit too much, but it was so worth it.  Just a wonderful day!

2020 Dream Season

"If you don't know where you're going you'll probably wind up somewhere else." -Yogi Berra

I start thinking about the next racing season as soon as any season ends.   I plan the races, so I can allocate my vacation days. Most of them seem to go to racing.  All the better if I get to see some new places when I race.

My role this year as both a Subaru/NSP and USA Triathlon Foundation Ambassador had a really large influence on my race picks.  I want to take the Subaru to as many races as possible.

As a USA Triathlon Ambassador, I am required to do two races out of a list we were given. I am choosing the Toyota Legacy Triathlon in Long Beach because it is the Para-triathlon National Championship. I am going to try to see if I can be classified into the National Championship. I had to meet the qualifying time. This may be my last shot to do so.

The other race I am doing for USAT is the Age Group Sprint Triathlon National Championship because it is in my hometown of Milwaukee. I am so excited to once again race on my home course.  I also had to qualify this race.  I have no hope to qualify for the US team, but just being there is enough for me.

Instead of wearing my Team CMT uniform for these races, I will be wearing the USAT Triathlon Foundation uniform.  I'll wear it proudly as a way to give back to the sport that has done so much for me.

I will also be joining Team USA in Almere, the Netherlands in September for the Aquathlon World Champsionship This will be my fourth time at this event. It is an easy one to do becasue I don't have to ship a bike.

I will be doing Duathlon Nationals in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in May. I am doing three races over three days in the hope to qualify for the World Championship in Australia in 2021.  National Championships are also on my schedule for Minneapolis in March. I will will be doing the Winter Triathlon National Championshp. I've been working on my skate sking this season in preparation.

I'm still on the fence about doing the Off Road National Championship in Hewitt NJ.  Will see as it gets closer. I would love to do this race as an excuse for a road trip out east.

So far here is what I have scheduled.

February 15                                                   Cullen Run 8K Milwaukee
March 1                                                         Winter Triathlon National Championship, Minneapolis
May 16                                                           Off Road National Championship, Hewitt, NJ
May 30                                                           Duathlon National Championship, Tuscaloosa, AL
May 31                                                           Duathlon Draft Legal National Championship, AL
June 17                                                           Superrun 5K Milwaukee
June 22                                                           Pleasant Prairie Sprint Triathlon, Wisconsin
July 4                                                              Firecracker  4 Mile Run, Hales Corners WI
July 18                                                            Paratriathlon National Championship, Long Beach, CA
July 26                                                            Cudahy 5 mile run, Cudahy, Wisconsin
August 7                                                         USAT AG Open Water Swim, Milwaukee, WI
August 9                                                         USAT AG Sprint Triathlon National Championship
Aug 18                                                            Sprint Aquathlon, Menomonee Falls, WI
Aug 25 and 26                                                 WSO Cycling Events, Menomonee Falls, WI
Sept 10                                                             Aquathlon World Champsionship, Almere
October 31                                                       Discovery Run 5 mile, Oak Creek Wisconsin

I am taking a bit of a break from both long distance running and long distance multi-sport evetns. I think it was time to give my body a break this season. I also did not want to spend all of my time training.

I hope I can meet some of our Team CMT members as I travel to do these events. The best part of all of my races is seeing friends in the running and triathlon community. I am hoping for a great season.

I was chosen as an ambassador to tell my story of being a CMT affected athlete and to aspire others to dream big.  I have big dreams too. I have big goals for 2020. Now let's get this season started!

Soup Sunday-Turkey Wild Rice Soup

This is a repeat of one of the recipes I published in my book Soup Sundays.  It is one of my favorites so I am going to repeat it. Plus there was an ingredient missing in the published recipe.

 Turkey Wild Rice Soup

4 cups of turkey bone broth
1/2 yellow onion chopped.
8 ounces of protobella mushrooms sliced
1 teaspoon minced garlic
5 tablespoons butter
3 stalks of celery chopped
2 cups of cooked turkey cut into bit sized pieces
2 cups of hals and half
3/4 cup wild rice
1 teaspoon of sage
salt and pepper to taste.

Place the butter in a Dutch oven.  Melt over low heat. Once melted add the garlic, onions and mushrooms. Cook until the mushrooms are soft.  Add the turkey broth and bring to a low boil.  Add the wild rice and cook for 40 minutes.  Add the turkey and celery. Cook for another 10 minutes.
Add the sage and the half and half.  Salt and pepper to taste.

Serves 6

Season 2020 Kick Off- Steve Cullen 8K

"Failure is not the opposite of success, it is the stepping stone to success."Michael Jordan

I had no races in December and January.  For many years, I've taken a few months off from hard training and competition.

I also switch gears during those months trading swimming for nordic skiing. I've been working on my skate skiing to get read for the Winter Triathlon National Championship on March 1st.

I love the skiing, it is a nice change of pace and lots of fun. It gets me outside in winter and is great conditioning for running.   My training has been pretty free form. I just have been doing lots of both nordic and alpine skiing.  My running has taken a back seat. It has been a nice change from the long distance training I did all last year.

So on Feb 15th it was time to kick off my 2020 season.  The Badgerland Striders the local running club were holding a 8 K race.  Despite having a healthy break, I did not want to do the race.

When I woke up on race morning the windchill was 10 F due to up to 40 mph winds.  I tried to talk myself out of going.  I considered the sidewalks and bike paths were icy, but the run was all on city streets.

What got me out the door is that I have volunteered to work at packet pick up.  I thought at the very least I should go work and pick up my tee shirt.

Once I was there I thought I might as well run the race as an easy workout.  I was going to the ski hill right after the race to ski my duty shift for Ski Patrol. So I dress in what I would wear to skil wool base layer top and bottom, fleece lined tights and Smart Wool top.    I added a fleece jacket on top and a fleece hoodie.

Ten degree windshil is as miserable as it sounds.  I've done the race several times, so it really was a routine workout.  My goal was to finish in an hour and I did that finishing 5th in my age group. I got points toward the club championship and one of the four races I need to be scored for the series.

This race is never a fast one for me. I am never in race shape in February and I don't race well in the cold.  Plus I knew I had to hold back a bit since I had 9 hours of down hill skiing to do for my Patrol Shift.

I was so tired from the skiing and running that I skipped the Sunday biathlon race I had planned to do.  I can't say the race was a great success, but I showed up.  It is all part of the process of building up for serious races later in the season.

USA Triathlon Role

"Wanting to be someone else is a waste of who you are."- Kurt Cobain

The USAT ambassador role is the 2nd I was awarded in the last year.  The first was in October when I was named to be a National Ski Patrol and Subaru ambassador.  The NSP marketing manager told me the reason I was selected out of the pool of over 400 applicants was the committee was intrigued by my being an active patroller with CMT.  They thought it was really unusual for someone with CMT to be on patrol I was selected to tell my story through out 2020.  I gladly accepted that challenge and will continue by blogging about patrolling and my racing.  I will be submitting two articles during the year to appear on the NSP web site. I also have a profile on the NSP web site. There are 26,000 patrol members on 600 patrols nation wide. It is a new audience for me.

When I was diagnosed I decided to dedicate myself to raising awareness of CMT. It was common at the time for people to hide their diagnosis. CMT can be an invisible impairment. But hiding my CMT won't help find a cure. So I was willing to be the face of CMT. I am joined now by dozens of CMT affected athletes on Team CMT.

Last month I was notified I was accepted to be a 2020 USA Triathlon Foundation Ambassador powered by Newton running.  It was my chance to represent the para-triathlon community. It is a sport we want to grow. I know first had the benefits of the triathlon lifestyle.  I became a triathlete when long distance running was starting to become a challenge due to my CMT.

The job comes with a couple of perks, a free Road ID, Newton running shoes, uniform and USAT membership. With the perks come some obligations. I will be raising funds for the foundation.

In addition I will appear at and do a service project at least the following two races:

  •  July 18-Toyota Legacy Triathlon, Para triathlon National Championship, Long Beach California
  • August 7,8,9-Toyota Age Group Sprint Triathlon National Championship, Milwaukee Wisconsin
I am so excited to be at both of these races.  I got a qualifying time to go through a classification appointment in Long Beach. Fingers crossed I make it through.

This is the fourth time I will be racing for an age group national championship in Milwaukee.  The championship was in Milwaukee for three years and will be returning again for 2020 ad 2021.  I also volunteered at the race making for the best athletic weekend ever. I was so proud to welcome athletes from all over the country to my home course

Again I believe I was chosen for this honor partly because of my CMT. I have actively raced multi sport at both the national and local level. I am looking forward to making the foundation stronger and to helping grow the sport.  I hope I can inspire all kinds of people to take up the multi-sport lifestyle.

If I could wave a magic wand and cure my CMT, I would do so. Barring that I am going to be open and honest about the challenges I face and I am going to use racing to raise awareness and funds.  Hope you will follow me on the journey.

CMT or Charcot-Marie-Tooth is the most commonly inherited peripheral neuropathy. It affects over 155,000 Americans (as many as MS).  It is a disease of the nerves that control the muscles. It is slowly progressive, causing loss of normal function and or sensation in the lower legs/feet and arms/hands.

Symptoms include; muscle wasting in the lower legs and feet leading to foot drop, poor balance and gait problems Atrophy in the hands causes difficulty with manual dexterity.

Structural foot deformities such as high arches and hammer toes are common.

Poor tolerance for cool or cold temperatures and many people have chronically cold hands and feet.

Additional symptoms may include fatigue, sleep apnea, breathing difficulties and hearing loss.

Busting Comfort Zones

2020 NSP Subaru Ambassador

"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone." -Neale Donald Watsch

In my book, I talked about my start in skiing.  I learned how to ski in college, because a guy I had a crush on was a really good skier.  So not only did I become a skier, I worked really hard to get better.

I went on may trips out west and did lessons every time. I thought I was a pretty good skier until I joined a local ski patrol. This time the tables were turned and I was recruited by someone that had a crush on me.

I joined because I wanted to learn first aid skills. My dad had gotten hurt at his vacation property.  He broke his wrist and started going into shock.  I wasn't there when it happened, but I visited often. I wanted to be prepared in case he or any of my family needed me.  The first aid was easy, the skiing was another story.

When I joined patrol 30 years ago, all testing was done at the region level.  That meant all the patrols in South Eastern Wisconsin tested their candidates on the same night. I was told the week of the test that I was not good enough to even go to the test. I was crushed and I thought about quitting.

To keep me interested and on patrol I was asked to become a first aid instructor.  Not only did I love it, I was really good at it.  I looked to do more and more training at work since I was comfortable in front of groups.  My patrol training taught me how to do creative training for adults.

It was a skill I used often and went back to school to get a graduate degree in Adult Education. I became a professional trainer.  I meshed my technical background as an engineer with training.  I was able to also use my writing skills to develop over 75 training programs. I was even awarded a Yellow Merit star for some work I did for Patrol

Although I was a good trainer, the skiing proved to be a challenge.  I failed the first two times I did go to the region for testing.  It was crushing.  By that time I'd made many friends on Patrol so I stuck with it.

I kept training and practiced over and over.  Finally I passed the on -the hill portion and I have proudly warn my patrol jacket for over 25 years, 30 years in total on patrol.

The reason the skiing part was a challenge was because of my CMT.  I think skiing would be impossible for most with CMT because of balance issues and lower leg weakness.  Any new skill I gain takes much more work to gain the muscle memory necessary.  I constantly work to improve my skiing.  It has taken persistance which being on patrol has drawn on constantly.

Skiing started me on my life as an athlete as well. In order to get better, I thought it would be a good idea to gain some strength and conditioning. I took up rowing with a local club in Milwaukee. I did my first competition as a rower. Racing was adicting.

I also took up running to compliment the rowing.  I loved it, but wanted to be faster so I could do better at  rowing and running races.

I noticed all the really good runners did marathons. So I decided to start running long distance. The problem was I could not run every day without getting injured.  To stay healthy I started swimming and biking. Since I was doing three sports already I started to compete in triathlons.  In addition I occastionally do cycling time trials, swim meets and a bit of ski racing.  I even tried biathlon this year at a nordic ski race camp.

I've used the races to raise awareness of CMT. I do it because I realize it's a gift to be able to be active. I want to use it to help others.  I've now run the Boston Marathon, competed at numerous National Championships and been a member of Team USA three times.

I'm glad I've never let something being hard or failing stand in my way. I'd did not feel good to fail my ski tests.  It has taught me to appreciate every physical challenge I've met. It has made the victories that much sweeter. It has motivated me to take on new challenges.  I constantly challenge my comfort zone.  As Michael Jordan said, "I've failed hundreds of times, that is why I am successful."

And it all began with Ski Patrol.
